Streaming Through A Firewall

Printer FriendlyTell a Friend
This is based on a D-Link DI-624
Router/Firewall other makes and models will have similar
functionality. If the network has IT people who maintain it you will
need them to set this up for you.

You will need to log into the router;
this is done by entering the routers IP address in a web browser. My
router's address is 192.168.0.1 so I enter http://192.168.0.1
in my browser and the built in web server in the router then prompts
me for my username and password. After I'm logged in I navigate to
the Virtual Server configuration screen. On my router this is on the
Advanced tab. On a NetGear router look for the Port Forwarding menu.

Now it is just a matter of filling in a
form to create a new virtual server. I called mine “Streaming”.
The private (or local) IP should be set to the IP address of the
machine that will be streaming. If you start the VT or TriCaster
streaming it will report the IP address like this
mms://192.168.0.101:80. The 192.168.0.101 is the IP address we need.
The number after the last colon is the port number which will
normally be 80. Enter that into the form also. Unless you have good
reason to do differently set the public port to 80 also. You can now
apply these setting.

The only other information you need is
the public IP address of the router. This is the address assigned by
your Internet Service Provider to you router. On my router there is a
status page that has this address listed. Be aware that this address
can change from time to time if your ISP uses dynamic IP addresses
(most do). Today my public address is 70.231.127.103. If you see an address that starts with "192" that is the routers address on the local network, you need its external IP.

If you run a software firewall on the
TriCaster /VT machine you either need to disable it or allow an
exception on port 80 to allow the connection.

Now I can tell my viewers to connect to
mms://70.231.127.103:80 and they will connect to my stream.

What we have just done is told the
router that any connection request coming in on port 80 should be
re-routed to my internal machine at address 192.168.0.101 on port 80.
Normally the router would prevent any connection to machines on the
internal network. At CTS on the tv show 24 they call this “opening a port” so
now you can pretend you're Jack Bauer for a while. For security
reasons you don't want to leave the virtual server active when you
aren't using it so be sure to remove or disable it when you are done
streaming.
